Calculate net earnings or work backward from a goal

Take-home mode subtracts percentage and fixed fees from the amount paid by the client or customer. Target mode reverses that calculation to estimate the gross price needed to keep a chosen amount.

Take-home = gross amount × (1 − percentage fees) − fixed fees
Required gross = (target take-home + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − percentage fees)

Current platform presets

Upwork: the official freelancer service fee currently ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. The calculator starts at 10% only as an editable example; use the percentage displayed on your proposal, offer, or contract.

Fiverr: Fiverr states that freelancers receive 80% of the completed order amount, including extras and tips. The preset therefore uses a 20% platform deduction and excludes optional services, taxes, and withdrawal costs.

Etsy: Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee. Etsy Payments processing varies by country. The U.S. example uses 3% plus $0.25; replace those values if your payment account is located elsewhere. Shipping, gift wrap, ads, regulatory fees, VAT, and currency conversion can also change the final result.

Worked examples

On a $1,000 Upwork contract with a 10% contract fee, the estimate is $100 in fees and $900 take-home. To keep $1,000 at the same rate, the required billing amount is about $1,111.11.

For a $100 U.S. Etsy order using the displayed base preset, the estimate includes $6.50 transaction fee, $3.00 processing fee, $0.25 fixed processing fee, and $0.20 listing fee. Optional advertising or regulatory charges are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I edit every preset?

Marketplace policies and contract terms change. Editable fields let you use the exact rates shown in your own account instead of relying on a universal assumption.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. Income tax, VAT, GST, sales tax, and withholding depend on the seller, buyer, and jurisdiction. Add them separately when planning your price.

Are withdrawal and currency conversion fees included?

No. Payout providers, banks, and platforms may charge separate withdrawal or conversion costs. Enter a known fixed cost manually or account for it outside this estimate.

Why is Etsy only a U.S. example?

Etsy Payments processing rates and fixed amounts vary by the seller’s bank country. The 6.5% transaction fee is broadly applicable, while the processing preset must be adjusted outside the U.S.

Can I use this for another freelance marketplace?

Yes. Choose Custom and enter the marketplace’s percentage, processing, fixed, and listing fees.
